How Do Viruses Spread?

Every time a person opens their mouth to speak or breathe, they emit humid aerosolized vapor which may contain contaminants and pathogens like the Covid-19 virus, as in the images below. The smaller aerosols known as micro droplets float up and are suspended or, depending on air flow, are distributed around the room for hours. One person infected with the Covid-19 virus speaking normally releases 30 infectious doses per hour.  If that person is shouting or singing, they release 50 times more infectious doses into the room- 1,500 infectious doses every hour. The doses increase the longer the infected person is in the room.

Existing Solutions Fall Short

Traditional HVAC systems do not efficiently capture viruses between people.

Portable air purifiers are not close enough to people's mouths.

Masks are reasonably effective until they are removed to eat or drink.

Despite social distancing, air borne viruses remain suspended in the air for hours.

We Solved the Problem

Engineered controls are much better than behavior changes or personal protective gear. We start at the source with each person. Air flow studies have shown that no amount of filtration or viral removal devices installed in an HVAC system can completely eliminate transmission from person to person. Adding air purifiers to a room or enhancing the air filtration system helps to clean the air in the room, but does little to stop transmission between two people in conversation. To eliminate transmission of airborne pathogens you need to capture exhaled breath before it escapes into the room, and is breathed in by other individuals.

Engineering on pollution control developed a way to redirect and control air movement using “air knives.” The air knife is used in laboratories to eliminate risk and exposure during chemical reactions. Air knife blades and the use of positive and negative pressures direct the air between and around individuals to a pickup point where all the pathogens are removed. We have applied this technique at livFREEair.

Our patented Targeted Airflow Technology applies this concept in the business or home environments, incorporating it into the surroundings to target aerosolized vapor away from its source, the human mouth and nose. The entire room is also purified in this process.

We Cleaned IT Up!

Pathogen-laden vapor must be redirected to the air purification system immediately. A medical grade HEPA filter captures aerosolized vapor and large and small particulates and recirculates clean air into the indoor space. In addition to removing the COVID-19 virus and variants, the flu and other pathogens, the purification system removes bacteria and allergens.

Take Control

Using a blend of mathematics, physics and computer science, Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) Modeling is a tool to show the three-dimensional flow of air within a space. Remember the pictures of car aerodynamics? That’s CFD modeling!

CFD modeling shows that livFreeair’s Targeted Airflow Technology controls the aerosolized particles emitted from a person’s mouth. This is accomplished by directing those particles downward and away from occupants at the table, toward an air intake that will capture and purify that air.

Airflow In Action

A smoke test was an early indicator that the livFREEair system was functionally controlling air movement.  Suction provided by the fan in the base unit expels some of the smoke that is introduced over the base.  However, the air intake fan cannot clear all the smoke.  The videos show that, when the air knives in the halo and the base unit fan are both activated, the smoke is cleared readily and does not drift toward the ceiling.  Controlling the air flow is key!

No. The livFREEair system effectively protects people from all airborne aerosols and contaminants. This includes the flu, viruses & variants, dust, bacteria, air pollutants, ozone, smoke, etc.
The device uses thin air “blades” and changes in air direction to forcefully but gently move aerosolized particles that are emitted from people’s mouths down and away from occupants at the table. The isolated aerosolized particles are then sucked into the air intake and passed through a filter that is designed to filter 99.9% of particles ≤ 0.3 microns in size (the size of viruses).
Rather than pushing air and aerosolized microorganisms up and/or around a space, Targeted AirFlow purposely directs the airflow between people toward an air intake fan to remove the aerosolized pathogens via a filter.
The livFREEair system is furniture-based. All elements of the system are self-contained and require no modifications to your office, restaurant, or other workspace.
